This piece spells the word "mother" or "ma" in Hindi. Made initially for the 798 biennial in Beijing while I was pregnant, it utilizes the colors of the Chinese flag while referring simultaneously to blood and umbilical cords. In this piece, the word mother stands for mother Goddesses, the planet, nation, home and family. This piece is studded entirely in nails in an analogy to our often ambivalent violent conflicted relationships with the above stated elements - the violence perpetrated by men on women, by people in the name of nations, by humans against the planet and between mothers and their offspring…
