The title, taken from an Elvis Costello song
written by Nick Lowe, seems particularly apt at the turning of the
year when we can be so sated with the sentimental and assaulted by
the avarice of the consumer world, both masquerading as the genuine
article: love. It’s a time when families, gathered together to
celebrate, can fall into argument and fighting; a time too when in
the wider world differing religions vie for supremacy. In such
times it is easy to become cynical, but what exactly is so funny
about Peace, Love and Understanding?

26 October 2011

Dharamsala – On Wednesday 26 October, Tibetans in exile will set
foot on Tibetan soil. Leading Tibetan artist, Tenzing Rigdol, has
transported 20,000 kilograms of soil from Tibet to Dharamsala, home
of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan government in exile and more than
10,000 Tibetan refugees. The soil will be spread on a stage where
people will be invited to walk and sit as well as express their
feelings through a standing microphone. The design of the
site-specific installation, titled "Our Land, Our People," comes
from the inspiration and interpretation of the Tibetan national
flag and the tragic history of Tibet.

Fair, Beirut: 13 - 16 July

Menasa, an acronymn for Middle East, North
Africa, South Asia, is a young art fair, eager to tap into the
energy so palpable in Beirut today. Dedicated to showing exciting
work from across a vast region stretching from Morocco to
Indonesia, the fair is set to become one of the more interesting
destinations of the international art world.

We are showcasing the work of Fereydoun Ave
from Iran and Naiza H Khan from Pakistan, both of
whom are well respected artists and curators. Fereydoun, recognised
as one of the formative spirits of the Iranian contemporary art
world, now divides his time between Tehran and Paris. We shall be
showing a selection of works created between 1999 and 2010. Naiza
Khan has fast built a reputation as one of the foremost artists
working in Pakistan. Featured in international exhibitions around
the world she has recently herself curated the groundbreaking show,
The Rising Tide at the Mohatta
Palace in Karachi, Pakistan's first
museum exhibition of contemporary art from the country. In Beirut
we are showing a series of mixed media works and small sculptures
based around her exploring the the fishing port of Manora, a
seaside town recently partially abandoned and destroyed by
developers hoping to create a new tourist destination.

Contemporary: Erbossyn Meldibekov at ArtHK 2011: 26 - 29 May

Erbossyn Meldibekov

Lost Paradise (I am here to see you, you are here to
see me)

For the fourth year since its inception in 2008 we are delighted
to announce our participation in ArtHK, Asia's
leading art fair. This year a newly expanded roster of galleries
promises to make the fair even more diverse and exciting with
interest building-up around the news of its purchase by Art
Basel.

Erbossyn Meldibekov has fast earned a
reputation as Central Asia's agent provocateur with his playful yet
political artistic practice that examines the trials and
tribulations of post-Soviet geography and condition. In the lead-up
to his participation in the 54th Venice Biennial,
Meldibekov's Art Hong Kong debut Lost Paradise features
the artist as spin doctor, mounting a fictitious – and highly
absurd – political campaign, which seemingly promises choice,
progressive nostalgia, and defiance against Soviet Orientalism, but
ultimately results in failed Utopia: the Lost Paradise of
the exhibition’s title.

Works will range from Mutations, (2009) four cast
bronze heads, ‘portraits’ that meld the artist's face with
those of other historical figures such as Lenin, Giacometti or
Genghis Khan, to his more familiar enamelled vessels that he has
beaten and crushed to form simulacra of mountain
ranges. Winter on the Peak of Lenin/Spring on the Peak of
Avicenna, (2010) sees metal pots fashioned to resemble the
real mountain range separating neighbouring Central Asian republics
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Since the collapse of the Soviet
Union both nations have been quarrelling over its naming with
the Kirghiz government retaining the Soviet name Peak of
Lenin and Persian speaking Tajikistan vying for Peak of
Avicenna, after the renowned 10th century Persian
scientist Ibn Sina (Greek name Avicenna). Meldibekov proposes as a
solution a seasonal timeshare between the two nations as means to
adopt both histories, with the mountain changing name every six
months.

Several new works will also be premiered: In Grandfather and
Child, (2011) three cast bronze sculptures fuse the image of
Marx with one of Central Asia’s current and most revered Uzbek
terrorists Tahir Yuldashe, who, ironically, joined the communist
party after the collapse of the USSR and exemplifies that fine line
between Soviet and Eastern-Orientalism. One Golden Thread in a
Central Asian Carpet or China Beware, (2011) an alternative
Turkmeni carpet incongruously made of some 80,000 gold-coloured
metal threads, one of which is 2 gram strand of gold, echoes
Meldibekov’s familiar pairing of the familiar with the foreign,
commodity and commodification in the age of global consumption.
