Learning to Surf is the eponymous publication for Matthew Brandt’s first ever solo exhibition in Asia. Prints dipped in lake water, images heat-fused onto glass, and pigments produced from burnt forests – process-heavy, the images produced by Brandt always result in a transformed or distorted view. His practice intertwines subject and material, and his fixation on methods of developing and printing images makes his photography akin to the process of object-making. In this way, his subjects comprise both the pictorial element and the photographic process, clustering tactile layers of reality both seen and experienced.
