Family Album is a collection of old snapshots in which family members pose in front of monuments. The format Meldibekov uses is 'before and after': black-and-white pictures from Soviet times are set against more recent photographs (often in colour) of the same people in the same spot after independence. In these works, sentimental significance is set in collision with heroic symbolism because it is clear that both the people and the monuments have been completely transformed – the former gently and gradually by the effects of time, whilst the latter more obviously deformed by changes in politics and ideology.
